The staff of Vision Engineering Italy is actively committed to the development of new methods and instrumentation to improve the effectiveness of the treatment of cross linking corneal for the treatment of keratoconus.
The corneal cross linking induces a stiffening of the keratoconus cornea by exploiting a chemical process called photo-polymerization. The traditional treatment of cross linking consists in instilling drops of riboflavin on the corneal stroma, after corneal de-epithelialization, for about 30 minutes and then in irradiating the cornea with an UV-A lamp for 30 minutes. Despite the treatment is effective, however, it is not free from complications, albeit rare, which may alter the integrity of the corneal tissue.
The research is aiming to develop new corneal cross linking procedures that are more effective and safer than the traditional treatment. The results of the first transepithelial procedures (so called because they do not remove the epithelium) were, however, controversial. Since 2013, it is possible to perform the transepithelial corneal cross linking using iontophoresis, which is proving to be as effective as the traditional procedure.
The Staff of Vision Engineering Italy srl, rich experience on the validation of the cross linking with corneal iontophoresis, is currently engaged in the development of an innovative UV lamp modular for the treatment of cross linking and corneal treatment of photo-chemo-oxidation of keratitis and ulcers are resistant to antibiotic therapy.
