Dr. Marco Lombardo is an International expert of corneal laser surgery for the correction of refrative defects, such as myopia, hypermetropia and astigmatism. He is one of the pioneers of the advanced surface ablation techniques; he has authored tens of scientific publications and books on this field of research. He is invited on a regular basis to present the results of his work to international conferences and to clinical centers worldwide.
Dr. Marco Lombardo is responsible for several projects aiming at developing adaptive optics technology for the early detection of retinal diseases and at developing new treatments for the cure of keratoconus (transepithelial corneal cross linking) and for the cure of corneal blindness using stem cells.

Dr. M. Lombardo is registered as physician, specialized in ophthalmology and eye surgery at the Ordine dei Medici-Chirurghi della Provincia di Roma with registration number M50316. He has his own private practice in via Nizza, 46 – 00198 Rome (to make an appointment call +39 331 3438300).
Dr. M. Lombardo is expert at detecting and treating keratoconus and corneal pathologies, retinal pathologies and macular diseases. He is expert in refractive laser surgery, cataract surgery and pediatric ophthalmology. He has performed more than 1800 surgical procedures, mostly on the anterior segment of the eye.
The main Dr. Marco Lombardo’s research interests are corneal biomechanics, corneal cross-linking, high-resolution optical microscopy (including adaptive optics and non-linear two-photon microscopy), nanotechnology, laser-tissue interaction, human optics and quality of vision, biocompatibility of intraocular lenses, innovation technology in ophthalmology.
Dr. Lombardo is Senior Researcher at the IRCCS Fondazione G.B. Bietti of Rome since January 2010. He is responsible for various assorted, clinical and experimental, research projects related to the analysis of corneal biomechanics and optical quality of the cornea. He is principal investigator for the first Italian study on the application of adaptive optics retinal imaging for early detection of neuro-retinal diseases. He is also principal investigator of a clinical trial which aims to investigate the efficacy of a new transepithelial corneal cross-linking procedure using iontophoresis (trial n. NCT02117999).
Dr. Marco Lombardo’s has been awarded several prizes for the results of his research in ophthalmology and visual science. He has published more than 50 papers on the most prestigious International peer-reviewed journal in Ophthalmology, Optics and Vision Science. He is Editorial Board Member of the Journal of Ophthalmology and he also serves on a regular basis as reviewer for 18 scientific journals in the field of ophthalmology, vision science, optics and microscopy.
Dr. Marco Lombardo is often invited to show to the general public the achievements of his scientific and clinical work on magazine, TV or WEB podcast. You can find all his TV interviews on Vision Engineering Italy YouTube channel.
