Gli studi clinici AREDS hanno dimostrato che la supplementazione con luteina previene e riduce in modo significativo il rischio di progressione della degenerazione maculare verso gli stadi avanzati. Lo svantaggio dell\u2019attuale terapia preventiva \u00e8 che \u00e8 necessario assumere pillole di luteina ogni giorno per decenni.<\/p>\n<p>Nel caso che la degenerazione maculare evolva verso la forma \u201cessudativa\u201d \u00e8 possibile intervenire con le iniezioni intravitreali di farmaci anti-angiogenetici. Pu\u00f2 essere ripetuto nel corso del tempo in modo da garantire alla retina un adeguato apporto di luteina. I risultati degli studi pre-clinici sono stati pubblicati sulla rivista <em>Journal of Biophotonics<\/em> di Febbraio 2018.
